West Belleville was its own town before it was a neighborhood. Founded on land settled by Bavarian judge Theodor Erasmus Hilgard, it operated as an independent town starting in 1852 and an incorporated village from 1874, until it merged into the City of Belleville in 1882 — thirty years of its own local government before joining its bigger neighbor. West Main Street, the town’s original spine, is still the corridor’s backbone today.

The Town That Merged Into Belleville in 1882

West Belleville was platted roughly “one mile square,” running from around Richland Creek near 11th Street out to about 22nd Street, with its own public square on West Main. Its economy centered on coal mining and brewing — the Western Brewery here later became the Stag Brewery — and the town, like the rest of Belleville, was predominantly German American.

After thirty years as an independent municipality, West Belleville’s residents voted to merge into the City of Belleville in 1882, largely over the cost of running its own services. Part of the old town’s commercial core is now within the Blair Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015, and West Main Street itself even hosted Belleville Township High School from 1916 until its 2003 move to the current campus.

Common Plumbing & HVAC Calls We See in West Belleville

🏠

1850s-early 1900s commercial-block plumbing

The Blair Historic District section of West Main Street includes commercial buildings from the 1850s into the early 1900s, with the aging supply and drain infrastructure you’d expect from buildings this age.

🔧

Older residential blocks off West Main

The residential streets that filled in around the original town core carry a mix of pre-1900 and early-1900s housing, with the galvanized supply and clay or cast-iron drain issues that come with that age.

🚨

Grading & street-corridor drainage

West Main’s corridor has seen recent street and curb work between 17th and 28th Streets — during and after roadwork like that, we sometimes get calls tied to disrupted service line connections or altered drainage.

🚰

Mixed residential/commercial water heater & fixture work

With homes and small commercial spaces sitting close together along the corridor, we handle both standard residential service and light commercial fixture and water heater work.
